Are You Trying To Hold your heart Together?

“My flesh and heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” -Psalm 73:26, ESV

There is a tension between our human efforts and our human limitations.

Do you feel it? Lord knows, I do.

Without really realizing it, I try so hard for my own efforts to be enough to hold the hurting parts of my heart together. Stretched in a million different directions, my human limitations remind me that my human efforts not working.

And let me tell ya, attempting to hold your heart together is exhausting.

It’s exhausting because I am not Jesus. I can not be all things to everybody (or even just myself), especially not the healer of my own heart. But somewhere along the way, I made up my mind that I had to hold it all together; for myself and for those around me.

When we are trekking through brokenness, grief, and pain, our efforts to hold our own hearts together will cease to be enough. At some point when we are trying to be enough to hold it all together, our efforts will fail. But this is good news.

Are you trying to hold your heart together?

“Why?”, you ask.

We do not have to try to be more than who God made us to be- and He created us with the need to be sustained and held by Him; to be dependent on His strength and power (which never fail). I would even say that God is most glorified whenever we lean into who He created us to be.

So today my friend, let’s be willing to not hold ourselves to a standard we will never be able to meet. Let us lay down our efforts to be all things and hold it all together.

Reflect

  • What does today’s Scripture teach you about the character and heart of God?
  • Is there a certain area in your life where you are trying to hold it all together?
  • How does understanding who God created you to help you relinquish the need to hold it all?

Prayer

Father God,

I lift my heart up to you. You see all the ways I am trying to hold it all together, to heal my own heart, and be sufficient. But Jesus, I am weary and tired. I cannot do this alone. Thank you that you are strong, even whenever I am not. Thank you that you do not grow tired; even when I am exhausted and overwhelmed. Thank you that you still have abundant purpose and provision for me. I lean into your strength today, Lord. You are the strength of my heart. You are my portion forever.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.
